Some fun facts about Orthodontics

Everyone loves fun facts. Fun, fun, fun! The American Association of Orthodontists, or AAO, has come up with some fun facts about orthodontics that our team at Elvebak Orthodontics thought you might enjoy.
• There are nearly 4 million people in orthodontic treatment throughout the United States. Three out of four are younger than 18.
• The first mechanical treatment for correcting irregular teeth was suggested by Gaius Plinius Secundus (A.D 23-79).
• The American Association of Orthodontists is comprised of more than 12,000 members in the United States, Canada and abroad.
• The time required to complete orthodontic treatment ranges from 12 to 36 months depending on the nature and severity of the problem.
• Of the 160,000 dentists in the United States and Canada, 8,000 are practicing orthodontists.
• The cement that attaches the braces to the teeth is now made with a special fluoride-releasing substance.
• Wires activated by body heat used in today’s braces originally were developed by NASA for use in the space program.
• In addition to alleviating or preventing physical health problems, orthodontics can boost self-esteem as treatment aligns teeth, jaws and lips.

Meet Dr. Layne McCord

Layne K McCord, DMD, MS, MS

Welcome to my practice! Orthodontics is perfect for me because I am allowed to help others bring out the best in their smile. I think everyone should live life smiling!
I love that my adolescent patients are so fun, like to laugh and keep me young. I love the more mature patients because they are doing something for themselves that usually they have wanted to do for a long time. I enjoy helping patients achieve the best possible smile and a healthy bite. It is fun to see patients change and become more confident and secure because of the changes in their smile.

Education

Prior to becoming an orthodontist, I received my undergraduate degree in Zoology from Brigham Young University in Provo, UT. I then went on to attain my Dental Degree and Combined Master Degree (DMD and MS) in oral Biology from the University of Louisville in Louisville KY. I also did a General Practice Residency at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics and VA Hospital in Iowa City Iowa. I then continued on for Orthodontic training at the University of Iowa where I earned an additional MS degree in Orthodontics along with a certificate in Orthodontics.

Continuing Education

I choose to participate in Continuing Education because I want to provide the most proven up to date methods of treatment for my patients. I also enjoy learning new things and Continuing Education courses provide the opportunity for life long learning. I participate in the Upper Snake River Valley Study Club, and attend the AAO annual session as well as courses through Idaho State Orthodontic society Continuing Education.

In the office

We love to have fun! From the monthly patient contests to the fun movies being played on the flat screen, McCord Orthodontics is a place where patients can live life smiling! We help others achieve the best possible smile using the research proven orthodontic treatment.
My dream team is simply amazing! We currently have three full time orthodontic assistants Graciela, Orilia and Ashley.  We have been lucky enough to have two bi-lingual full time orthodontic assistants Graciela and Orilia in order to cater to our ever expanding patients.  Graciela does an amazing job of helping you feel comfortable every time you step into our office.  Orilia always has a smile on her face and brings joy to each of our patients.  Ashley is our newest team member and is very talented at making patients feel welcome and excited to visit every time they come in for treatment.  Audra is our appointment/financial coordinator and has such a warming smile.  You will see what I mean when you come visit us at our office.  She learns quickly and is good at what she does. Patients love her and she has a way of connecting with them to make them feel special. I am lucky to have her. She makes us laugh and helps us remember that life is all about smiling. She brings smiles to the faces of those around her. Last but not least, Kristi handles the roll of Dr's wife so well! She does a wonderful job supporting our office, and always has a smile! My whole team tries to make our office the best possible place for our patients

In the Community

My wife, Kristi, and I love living in Idaho Falls! I grew up here, and am proud to raise our daughters, Julia and Lindi, and our son, Austin, here. In my spare time, I like to water and snow ski, play golf, racquetball, watch college sports, and collect antique John Deere tractors with my father!
I have been involved with the church organization I belong to for many years and have the wonderful opportunity to work with many different adults as well as young people in helping them find joy and happiness in their life.
